The 1st International Forum on Rapid Drug Testing under the theme of "Rapid Testing Technology and Public Health" was held in Guangzhou from November 4th to 5th. The forum is sponsored by NICPBP, undertaken by Guangdong Provincial Institute for Drug Quality Control, co-sponsored by China Center for Pharmaceutical International Exchange, Chinese Pharmaceutical Association and Guangdong Pharmaceutical Association, and planned and organized by Reed Sinopharm. About 500 researchers from WHO, the United States, Britain, Russia, Singapore, Thailand and other countries, as well as Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Mainland China attended the forum. The drug testing agencies, instruments and pharmaceutical manufacturers participated in the forum with live demonstrations of the drug testing vehicles, quick inspection technology and equipment for drugs.Mr. Bian Zhenjia, Deputy Director of the State Food and Drug Administration attended the forum and delivered a key-note speech.
Bian Zhenjia said, inspection and testing are one of the most important technical supports in monitoring the pharmaceutical market, among which rapid drug testing technology, featuring easiness & quickness, has become one of the most powerful approaches to screen the counterfeit drugs on site, and has gained rapid development under the support of modern analytical and information technologies. With the economic globalization, cracking down on illegal activities of manufacturing and selling counterfeit and inferior drugs is no longer limited to a single country, but requires multilateral close collaboration to share resources and information. The establishment of a global network platform for rapid drug testing technology has therefore become imperative. This forum will play an important role in further strengthening the international cooperation and exchange on the rapid drug testing technology, promoting the development of rapid drug testing technology and combating illegal manufacturing and selling of counterfeit drugs.
According to Mr. Bian, drug testing vehicles masterminded by National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products (NICPBP) as a mobile rapid testing laboratory is capable of on-site rapid screening on commonly used drugs in local areas, so as to timely detect counterfeit drugs and effectively protect the public safety of drug use. Such drug testing vehicles played an important role in ensuring drug safety in the freezing rain and snow disaster in South China in early 2008, Wenchuan earthquake and Beijing Olympic Games. He hoped that NICPBP would speed up the upgrading and popularization of drug testing vehicles, and strengthen the promotion of such vehicles in other countries. Meanwhile, he also hoped that relevant departments, experts and scholars would better collaborate with each other to develop a simpler and more practical rapid testing technologies and methodologies for more convenient and efficient screening and detection of counterfeit drugs.
The forum invited a total of 11 experts from World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Drug Safety Research Association, the United States Pharmacopoeia Council, the School of Pharmacy of University of London and other relevant agencies from home and abroad to deliver keynote speeches.
